How can the working conditions of employees in companies be improved?

Employee performance and productivity are based on working conditions. The leader must mobilize to gather the parameters conducive to professional development. In a collaborative and caring spirit, here are the preventive measures to be adopted to boost employee motivation.

Adopt an ideal style of direction

Directive management is one of themanagement stylesthe most authoritarian. Power is concentrated in the hands of the manager and the superior. The latter lays down the rules of conduct to be followed and aims only at the results. Of course, the concept has some advantages, namely: faster decision-making, productivity and efficiency. However, it raises constraints for employees: ill-being at work, difficulty in relation, demotivation.

Persuasive management is centered on paternalism. All employees are invited to become involved in decision-making. Although the style seems more open, it remains no less authoritarian. The area of freedom is restricted and conflicts always take place. More relaxed, delegative management allows a good margin of manoeuvre for employees. Their views are important in decision-making. The communication is fluid, but the pressure is too high for some collaborators to perform certain delegated tasks.

Preventing occupational risks

The effectiveness of an organization depends on the working conditions of employees. Motivating and humanizing work involves reducing occupational risks. The method involves a thorough analysis of the sources of stress associated with each activity. The study takes into account:

  • Technical means available to employees;
  • Workspace: layout, lighting, physical atmosphere;
  • The postures: joint amplitude, force, movement repetition;
  • Work organisation: delegation of tasks, supervision, instructions;
  • Time: delays in execution, speed, working hours;
  • Support: training, experience, essential skills;
  • The variability of each individual: biological rhythm, privacy, health...

Opinions may differ, but should be taken into account in the risk assessment.

Develop a risk prevention action plan

A preventive action plan is then drawn up on the basis of prior analysis. Measures are divided into several types of actions:

  • Overall evaluation of work organisation;
  • The distribution of burdens according to the constraints of each actor;
  • Assessment of the pace of work of employees;
  • Increasing skills through enhanced training;
  • Optimization of career management;
  • Optimization of the company's internal communication;
  • Reorganization of premises according to the convenience of each person.

Use of financial aid

Business leaders are often reluctant to invest in new business risk action plans. Fortunately, there are the financial aids proposed by the National Agency for the Improvement of Working Conditions (Anact). The subsidies are intended exclusively for enterprises employing less than 250 employees. Two financial aids are proposed:

  • participation in financing a technical study with a budget of EUR 50 000 per project;
  • accompaniment aid for wage improvement projects up to EUR 1000 per day for 15 days.
